So to add to the boxes I discussed yesterday, here’s the Higurashi (”When They Cry”) box. I’m not really sure why they went for the images they did for this, though. While the gothloli images are cute, they don’t really represent how the characters appear in the series. I mean, what if the Haruhi box had just used images of the girls as loligoths and there was no image of Haruhi in her school uniform? Shouldn’t there be an image of Rena with her machete somewhere on a Higurashi box? But it looks like the images are close to those on the Japanese box (though not exactly the same). The cover of the DVD itself is OK, but when I found the reversible cover I switched to the one inside, a good image of Rena and Mion (again similar to the Japanese DVD, but cropped). I also note that they’ve made the “C” in the title red to match the ? in the Japanese, but shouldn’t the na in the romanji under the English title also be red? Anyway, it’s physically a solid box, which is always a plus. Watching this should get me excited for the new series too.

I don’t see why everyone thinks it’s so misleading. If anything, it looks creepy, and the logo is a clear sign that it’s horror. Maybe the lack of Rena-machete is so not to scare any poor roommates/parents/siblings?
It’s misleading because you have two small girls and the caption “When they Cry”
When I first heard that the US DVD was going to have a weird photo-negative illustration on the cover, I thought to myself: “I hope that it’s reversible, with the original Japanese art on the other side.” Nice. I still haven’t received mine in the mail, though :(
Maybe if the DVDs sell well enough, someone will bring over the sound novels, or Higurashi Matsuri for the PS2. I’m not getting my hopes up, though… the Japanese game licensing industry in the US is primitive and pathetically conservative, compared to the anime licensors.
@ Sana Jisushi: The outfits they’re wearing and the Mion/Shion pic might scare some more than a machete!
@ Eleutheria: lol
@ Matt: You’ll have to start a company an bring it over. Or we could create our own game, NHK-like, and sell it at cons. ^_^
