“I want to feel cute and be who I really am.”–Hinamori Amu
Super Condensed Description: Amu, a seemingly tough loli with a Goth fashion sense, is quite intimidating to her fellow (elementary school!) students but is still admired for her coolness factor. Deep inside she wants to be a cute and girly shoujo, and finally gets the chance when her heartfelt wish causes her three Guardian Characters to be born out of three magical eggs (!). They can grant her powers (”change her character”) at crucial moments, allowing her to perform such amazing feats as flying, transforming into a mahou shoujo, and blurting out a love confession in front of the entire school. She also gains new friends among the school’s elite students (who all have eggs too, albeit only one each, not three!) and new enemies, including a sexual-tension-inducing cat-eared boy (but I’d rather have a nekomimi).

Underdeveloped Analysis: The plot of this manga is solid, but the art really makes it irresistible. Hinamori Amu is so incredibly cute I can’t quite put it into words. Shibuko Ebara-sensei of Peach-Pit has drawn Amu with a great complexity of expression and bishoujo power which delights on page after page. I tried reading the Rozen Maiden manga, but it was one of those times where I’d seen the anime first, and when that happens I sometimes find it hard to get into the manga. The RM manga seemed a little choppy and rushed to me after the anime, but with SC the story flowed quite well. Also, I think the art is better than in the first two RM volumes that I’ve looked at. There’s an anime version of SC coming soon, but the character designs for it don’t seem to even remotely capture the style of the original art. Just compare the anime Amu with the one on the manga cover. There’s absolutely no comparison there! X_X

I really love Shugo Chara! Like you said, the setting is quite simple, but the charm is there. And the artwork is just adorable! I have seen both DearS and Rozen Maiden anime but I was never a fan of neither.. But this work from Peach-Pit seems to be more shoujo flavored compared to others, and I am highly anticipating the anime rendition this fall. I think, the anime version will be really good. As far as Amu’s anime design, I think it looks very similar.. (if you take a look at the cover of Shugo Chara US version volume 1, it is almost identical). And I also can’t wait for volume 2 to come out! Volume 1 ended in such a good part, too…
I truly apologize for the double post but I compared the anime character design from the official site to the manga and I realised that you are absolutely right! The eyes are way different… it reminds me of Ojamajo Doremi for some reason.. Creepy!
OMG shugo chara is like the best manga i’ve eva read … iwish that the anime would come out sson enough so i can read it, its soo good ive read the second volume but its in chinese… and i dun like to read manga in chinese its just too hard.. i wish the second manga could come out quicklt (in english) i mean its soooo darn good amu is like soo kawaii..the prince is so girly in a way -_-’. just to splurt a secret the princes fave girl is a dog ^_^ (seriously he is in love with a dog!) but i still rly love shugo chara and i am rly desperate to buy the second manga…oMg the blue gardian mikki is just sooooo kawaii i mean she so cute and shes just like -_-” all the time.. and Ran she rly cute too she like so… high to the world! and su i’ve course… i get soo hunghry every time i see her cooking OMg it looks so nice i just cant reist she like so fluffy i rly wanna see wat amu looks like when she transfroms with su i bet she gonna be all fluffy and rly adorable!

I just LOVE this manga its my fav!!!! i can really relate to the characters and i just adore the way amu-chan acts!! ur right the prince looks like a girl (reminds me of yuki in fruit basket exept he doesn’t go phyco lol jk) i will do anything to get this manga to be an anime gosh hurry up!??! at least sub the books I CAN ONLY SPEAK (and read) 2 LANGUGES AND I AM NOT GOING THROUGH THE TROUBLE OF LEARNING ANOTHER ONE! sorry i post twice but it seems that my comment didn’t come out T___T what i said was i’ve read it till vol 3 and looking for vol 4… even through i’ve got some spoiler and that i’ve spoil other T___T you can get vol 3 in my LJ if wanna ^^ and for the eyes… you’re right, on the cover of the manga Amu is more rebel than the anuime form… she’s like happy, not in the stage of rebelious neither was she in her cool mode ^^ she’s the total contrary of what she is and how Peach-Pit had drawn her like… and this is the way she would be… it was as if the anime already shown her change… her wanted personality… this is how i see it ^^

Oh, I love this anime. I’ve read the manga in chinese. Had to buy a magazine just so I could read it. Couldn’t get the magazine but I managed to get volume 4. Nadeshiko’s secret and Utau’s and Ikuto’s relationship is revealed in this volume. A must read.
Shugo Chara Volume 1 is really good! Volume 2 in already out and Volume 3 is coming out in January i think. They also have the episodes for Shugo Chara too! They also have the subbed versions as well. You can go to youtube and watch them!

I just recently started watching the anime for this and am not sure what I think of it yet. But my favorite quote so far has to be “Are you thinking of the girl whose lock fits your dumpty key?” Priceless!
The anime is candy for the eyes (not sure about the manga). It’s just an all-around great-looking anime.
I really like the anime but I think manga is a bit better.
