In the wake of stories I’ve seen recently about “Otaku Hunting” and the more sordid side of the maid phenomenon, comes an article in the Japan Times about the increase of crime and general seediness in Akihabara. This is sad. I have yet to visit the Great Otaku Land and by the time I ever get there it could be a very different place. It’s already been overrun by maids, and I suppose it’s inevitable that less savory aspects would eventually take root.
Still, with a little care and a visit during daylight hours I’m sure these developments don’t have to affect the bulk of visiting otaku, intent on the acquisition of much loot for “at home” use. The video from all those new security cameras could certainly make interesting viewing though!

Hmmm, too bad about the Akiba crime wave, but it would create more opportunities for Densha Otoko-type situations, I suppose ;)
I agree, its a real shame that this is happening. After reading that interview at danny choo’s site, it seems like I better go body building before going to Japan xD
Matt: You mean a strong woman saving the nerdy otaku from the otaku hunters?
Runningkid: Either that, or save extra funds to hire a bodyguard–maybe Danny Choo in his stormtrooper armor =)
