Yuuichi is my most hated ‘harem master’ so just remembering all these elements of Kanon angries up the blood.
“You’re a weak pathetic stupid freeloader, woman!”
“I love you, Yuuichi-kun!”
What a wank! How is any of their situations related to their sex. People of both sexes can become sick, vulnerable or dependant. Or do you think these girls are weak because they are girls?
The only sexist complaint you can have is that it’s a harem and the lead is male, like always. Welcome to erogame to anime adaptions.
Less Erogame, more FMP.
KyoAni is wasted on these stupid inane projects.
Enough exposure to anime and it’s community has kept me from worrying about such things. I don’t have time to explain properly but exposure to female fandom and it’s tendancy to fetishize men makes me wonder if fetishization is infact sexist at all. It isn’t as if anybody expects Kanon to supply female role models after all.
Karura >> Those girls seem to enjoy their treatment by Yuuichi. I wonder how he would deal with a Louise type with a whip.
snog >> There are certainly some weak male anime characters, but within the framework of this series, women of a certain childish type seem to be idealized. Even other harem shows don’t seem to go so far in this direction, as they often at least have some tsundere or women who are not as needy.
Supporter of ArmSlaves >> But isn’t variety good too?
Warpshadow >> Yes, fetishization cuts both ways. I don’t usually worry about it much, but this series seems to be a particularly blatant example of its type.
I’d like to say that, as a female anime fan, I never felt any blatant sexism in Kanon. You say that Yuuichi has to come and save all these “poor girls”, but don’t forget that Mai saved Sayuri in the past. It’s not about gender; it’s about having someone who cares.
Damn, you certainly hit the nail with the hammer in this post! As pretty as Kanon is, it portrays a universe that any girl with half a brain wouldn’t step near.
The same sort of infantilization of women is something that bugs me whenever I watch any of those “sick girl” live action dramas, too. It seems that whenever a girl gets sick in a drama (”1 Litre of Tears”, for example), she stays sick, and gets worse, all the while being cared for by the stoic-yet-sensitive male lead. She gets sicker and sicker while making emotional fatalist monologues. However, in the rare case that the drama is about a GUY getting sick, he’s portrayed as being stiff-lipped and heroic until the bitter end (if there is one). His loved ones will gather around him for support, but he’s never really cared for like a weak baby.
Anyway, sorry to rant, and thanks for posting this entry! :)
Once again, I’ll ask this simple question like I asked several other people and blogs:
WHY. IS. THIS. CRAP. NOT. ALL. OUT. HENTAI. QUESTION MARK.
Japan is a socially repressed society where there’s no inspiration in sight to become strong and grow spine. Just nothing but moe blobs and the animated females the cater to their masochism. This sucks. Really.
