Yet more embracing of the embarrassing: according to Japan Today, an academic society will be launched to study Gundam, perhaps with research into futurology (futurology???), which seems to be “foretelling a future image of the world.” The brief article’s description of Gundam is interesting:
Set in a future world where people emigrate to space because of overpopulation on Earth, Gundam, the popular televised animation series started in 1979, portrays struggles and growth among young people.
While accurate as far as it goes, this quote seems to miss the most important point: the frickin thing’s about GIANT ROBOTS!!! There’s lots of anime about the “growth of young people,” but if these academics want to “fortell a future image of the world” it had better have a realistic plan for workable giant robots!

ahaha- “No Mom, I don’t want to be a doctor anymore, I’m going to be a professional Gundam researcher when I grow up!” now it’s not just a dream anymore!
Wait . . . Gundam involves giant humanoid robots?
And I spent all this time thinking that the Universal Century was an in-depth piece of speculative fiction, using the sharp scalpel of prediction to cut through to the serious geopolitical problems we’ll face in the future, like people constantly trying to crash colonies, asteroids and whatever else they can get their hands on into the Earth, and the White Base running out of salt.
Great–but are Newtypes really gonna appear? lol
