What many thought of Kampfer…
Kampfer ep. 01 has some of the weirdest crap I’ve ever seen. Especially plushies with entrails hanging out. What is that all about? The characters in this thing have to fight with swords and guns and magic (oh, these weapons go by German names in the show; why do so many anime like to use German words? We got a lot of that already with Nanoha, etc). So yeah, the characters fight, so I guess the entrails plush animals are supposed to be a reminder of what the characters should do if they lose a fight and have to preserve their honor by means of harakiri. At least its not dango entrails!
It’s useless to point out that every aspect of this show has been done before. The main guy becomes a girl to fight, but the ramifications of this are ignored. The guy/girl has to go to the bathroom, but the scene shifts away without showing how he/she actually confronts this dilemma or any, um, experimentation he might be tempted to [the remainder of this sentence has been censored by the Dango Morals Authority].
But despite the oddness factor and the general crudeness of the production as a whole, it was actually entertaining! I like the girl who’s personality (and hair color) changes from shy librarian to tough girl. The possibilities with such a character are limitless and I hope they make the most of it! Horie Yui shows her skills with this role, although nothing can compare to that Lucky Star Episode where Hirano Aya easily switches between Konata and Haruhi voices! But this episode was very self-referential about its seiyuu, that is a bit pretentious…
Now I’ll take a look at what some others say about the episode…. Thank you Ani-Nouto for your condensation of two opinions. I can only say that I don’t mind too much a little bit of crassness: the scene with the German dictionary (or maybe it was a copy of the Kama Sutra?) being mistaken for a you-know-what was the funniest thing in the episode! The poor inexperienced girl might be genuinely alarmed to feel an unaccustomed weight on her! I like this quote from AnimeDiet: “However, for something that didn’t sound so great, it managed to keep a good pace.” It was well paced, but we’ll see if the material is eventually decent or two flawed for mere good pacing to save it.
