Above is a picture of the Tohyama-ke Folk Museum in Shirakawa-go, Japan. As many fans of Higurashi no Naku koro ni know, the town of Hinamizawa is based on a real place, Shirakawa-go, a village in Gifu Prefecture famed for its gasshō-zukuri farmhouses. This style of traditional farmhouse features very steep thatched roofs to handle large amounts of snow–gasshō-zukuri means “constructed like hands in prayer.” In Central Valley, NY (and two other locations) is GASHO of Japan, a Japanese steakhouse restaurant in a gasshō-zukuri farmhouse dismantled in Japan and brought to New York state. I haven’t been there in many years, but it would be a cool place to have a Higurashi party sometime. Higurashi cosplayers should pose there for pics too!
